Can I backup a DVD to iTunes for playing on Apple TV 3 with AC3 5.1 easily and quickly, then I can watch my favorite DVD movies
on ATV 3 whenever I like? This article will be the answer.
I'm a DVD lover, and I want to rip my DVD into iTunes format, then I can sync and playback on my Apple TV 3. So is there any way to backup DVD into iTunes library without touching and potentially damaging the discs by my children, as they have in the past? Plus, I would like to play ripped videos in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound (AC3).
As first, it is important to acknowledge the fact that iTunes cannot rip DVD to iTunes. So what if we want to watch DVD videos via iTunes instead of buying HD videos from Apple iTunes meanwhile
keeping 5.1 audio channel? To achieve this goal, Pavtube DVDAid
is recommended which my friend has used it for the same purpose. It is made for converting and copying DVD to iTunes compatible format for syncing with iPhone, iPad, iPod and Apple
TV 3 as well. The mac version is DVDAid for Mac.
How to backup DVD to iTunes library for syncing to Apple TV 3
Note: For those who would like to strem DVD to iTunes with Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound, you should make sure that your DVD disc has an AC3 5.1-channel track first.
Step 1. Run DVD to iTunes Converter; load DVD movies
Click the disc button to browse and import DVD disc from ROM, or load the ISO/IFO files that you want to convert for viewing on Apple iOS-based devices.
Pavtube DVDAid will detect and list the main title (the full length of this movie with all the chapters) and check it by default. So just keep it untouched and let’s move on to Step 2.
Step 2. Choose export format
You can click the "Format" dropdown menu, you will see many presets sorted of different device models and programs. Here I recommend you select "H.264 Video(*.mp4)" from "Common Video" category. which works well for iTunes syncing.
Step 3. Adjust specs or edit video before conversion (Optional)
Click “Settings” button to configure target file quality. After entering “Profile Settings” panel, you are allowed to adjust video and audio parameters such as bit rate, frame rate, sample rate, etc..
If you prefer a much better video quality and don’t mind the output file size, you can rise the video bit rate higher than 1500. Generally speaking, the higher video bit rate will result in the larger output file size, and vice versa.
And if you want to maintain 5.1 audio, just set Channels to 5.1 Channels option.
Step 4. Start conversion
Now hit the big red “Convert” to start converting DVD movies to iTunes friendly MP4 fomat with best settings for playback on Apple TV 3 with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. After the conversion, you can get the converted DVD rips in *.mp4 format by clicking the “Open” or “Open output folder” icon for video streaming.
Add DVD rips to iTunes movie library for streaming to Apple TV 3:
You can then add the new mp4 videos into iTunes movie library. Open up iTunes and follow "File>> Add file to Library…" to sync video to iTunes.

Merits of AC3 Format File
AC3 (Dolby Audio Coding 3) is composed of up to 6 audio channels, specifically, 5 channels for normal-range speakers (20 - 20,000 Hz) and 1 channel (20 Hz - 120 Hz allotted audio) for the
subwoofer driven low-frequency effects. In specific, the surround system provided by Dolby AC3 typically consists of 5 pure frequency domain channels including left front, right front, center,
left rear and right rear and 1 ultra-low track, called 5.1 channel.
Generally, DVD accepts 3 kinds of audio formats: AC3, MPEG2 and DTS. Compared with the latter two, AC3 mainly has the strong points below:
Good sound effect: AC3 audio is born
with extremely good audio effect; it enables you to feel original DVD audio and surround sound;
- Small file size: AC3 has high compression ratio, so the file size is small but the sound effect is amazing. The AC3 file of small size is easy to copy and carry;
- No subtitle: the AC3 audio file extracted from DVD contains no subtitle, which is customized to listening practice for both personal study and public instructional use;
- Easy controllability: you can pause, go fast forward or rewind this audio file grabbed from DVD conveniently;
- Meritorious recoverability: AC3 audio can be recovered, with excellent recovery effect. All information within 6 channels is digitalized in the processes of making and restoring, so the
information loss is very small.
